WHO IS BARRY ALLEN – what makes him tick
-- starts back in 1900 because we are products of our heritage.
My father was born that year in the part of the world that drifted
between Russia and Poland. He was the youngest of his six sisters and
brother. They emigrated together to America in 1906 as a result of the
pogroms of Jews in Odessa which was the most serious pogrom of the
period with reports of 2,500 Jews killed. At Ellis Island the family
name was changed from Zabludovsky to Silverman. My grandparents, aunts,
uncle and my Dad moved to Detroit, Michigan. Dad graduated High School
at 16. He wanted to become an engineer. His professor said he wouldn't
be able to get a job because he was a Jew. Instead eight years later he
became a Physician and Surgeon opening a clinic and surgery at age 24
in a mixed use building as he and my mother lived on the 3rd floor, his
clinic on the first floor with the surgery on the 2nd. When he started
his practice he changed his name again so his patients could easier
find him in the phone book. A marketing tool. In Henry Ford land,
Jewish General Practitioners were not given staff privileges at any
hospital. In 1942 my father, his brother-in-law and 4 other Jewish GPs
started a hospital, North Detroit General, to which Jewish doctors
could send their patients regardless of their ability to pay, their
ethnicity, religion or color. Things that today we take for granted.
I was born in 1940 with Peter's Anomaly. Moving from Detroit to
Southfield and changing schools at the 3rd and 4th grade level, I was
subjected to taunts and fights because I wore glasses and did not go to
the mandatory Christian churches. In 1952 before Southfield Michigan
had a high school, students including my brother were bussed to
Highland Park HS. Leola Jones was high school age but the Southfield
School Board refused to bus her to Highland Park High School, until Dad
threatened them with a Civil Rights lawsuit. The Board capitulated and
Leola joined my brother Jay on the bus trip. Meanwhile I found out that
being Jewish meant that the kids in school thought I had killed Christ.
Then they looked for the horns on my head. I was the only Jew in the
entire school district. Discrimination knew no bounds. I was recently
invited to the 50th High School reunion by the same kids that
discriminated against me. They said they had changed. Why did they move
the reunion 40 miles away from the High School? Because the area is
black now. The discrimination was still there, just a different target.
In Glendale, the discrimination is still here…just a different target.
More next week.

WHO IS BARRY ALLEN – what makes him tick
– To bring you up to date, my family suffered from discrimination,
bigotry and the pogroms in the early 1900s. In the next decade there
was the experience of religious discrimination in America. WWII and the
race riots in Detroit followed. Moving to the conservative suburbs
where I lived with being called a Christ killer. Then was the
segregation of the schools and my Dad's successful efforts to end
segregation in the Detroit suburbs. I was selected by the City to be
the assistant director of Civil Defense where I wrote the first
accepted program paper. After College and Law School I grew my security
and investigative business to 1000 employees, hiring regardless of
race, religion or national origin as well as gender and age. I applied
for a Detective's license and I was turned down because I wasn't a
former cop. I explained the application form did not conform to the law
(question authority) and I met all the legal requirements. Within a
week, I had my license. I could enthrall you with the many stories of
investigations – suffice it to say, we were very successful. I visited
Los Angeles in 1972 as a keynoter for the International Security
Conference. It was February. The plane out of Detroit's Metropolitan
Airport was the last out that afternoon as it slid on the runway ice
and finally went airborne. Los Angeles was delightful and 10 years
later I came back to live. I settled in Orange County and got into the
radio business as a talk show host. I was using my name…Allen Silvarman
and callers had a hard time with it. A focus group helped with the
decision to take my first name, Allen and my second name, Barry – I
have two middle names and I don't want to digress into the naming by
Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jewish parents, and gave me the air name of
Barry Allen. Our Mayor has been in several television episodes, not
once did he use his given name, yet he plays on mine. While on the air
in Orange County I started to investigate hate groups and talked about
them on air. One evening Tom Metzger, the head of the White Aryan
Resistance, called. We engaged and he made some significant admissions.
The tape went to Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center that
was in a wrongful death trial involving WAR in Oregon. Bigotry is a
problem many of us have personally faced. I chose to do something about
it when Ms Field and I settled in Glendale and were told about the "bad
Armos" by a Realtor. Next week – more – Taking a stand against bigotry.

WHO IS BARRY ALLEN – what makes him tick
– To bring you up to date, I covered the name changing focus group;
Orange County radio; a stand against bigotry and the bureaucracy. As my
children were growing up we shared the enjoyment of the diversity of
our friendships. Jeffrey, the MBA who is the VP-Marketing for a
document security firm had God-Parents who were immigrants. Lydia came
from Rumania and Emmet from Chaldea (Iraq – between the Tigris and the
Euphrates). The older children, Scott and Kelly, enjoyed the ride to
the inner city where the few Mexicans had restaurants. My clients
included the Armenian Cultural Center, a Catholic Monastery and Convent
and the major Jewish Temples and Synagogues. Truly, pluralism. Moving
to conservative Orange County from the cap capitol of the world and
then to Glendale, memories came flooding back. Memories of my aunts and
uncles from the old country and the bigotry and discrimination of the
past. Not towards me but towards others whom I feel protective of
because of my nature. When I hear someone say, ― I Jewed him down, I ask
what does that mean. When I hear the new Pledge of Allegiance I wonder
about substituting Allah or Adonai for the word God and what others
would say if they heard those substitutions.
- When I drive
by the park at Wilson and Adams and see the old gents wearing jackets,
white shirts and ties and even hats, I get reminded of my uncles who
dressed the same way and were accused of changing the culture. I hear
the same thing in Glendale. It is time to enjoy the cultural diversity.
I know many Philippinos but I really don‘t like the food served at
Philippine restaurants. The food at the Mediterranean restaurant makes
me feel that I am back in Israel enjoying not only the Israeli food but
that of many other cultures. I encourage each and every one who reads
Vanguard to go to a restaurant that serves something other than
American food. Max of Manila, Carousel, Moonmart Café, Katsuya, Sabor,
Elenas, to name just a few. Do it and engage the people. Ask questions.
Become an integral part of making Glendale a flourishing,
multi-cultural community.

Good morning,
I am researching the background of a person who claims to be a graduate of the WSU Law School, and I was hoping that you could verify that.
He goes by the professional name of "Barry Allen," but his real name is Allen B. Silvarman, and he claims to have received a JD degree from the WSU Law School in 1964.
If possible, I would like to know if that is true. He graduated from Southfield High School, Class of 1957.
Please feel free to contact me should you require additional information - my contact information is below.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
- Bill Weisman

Dear Mr. Weisman,
Your e-mail to verify a JD degree was forwarded to me. I have checked all our records and did not find any record of an Allen B. Silvarman (or Silverman) receiving a JD degree from this institution.
